| Looks like teachers finally have a site that tells it like it is! In reference to the "We have met the enemy, and it is us" article in Teacher Views, I agree. After 20 years in the profession, I too think teachers wallow in their false sense of inferiority. By nature, teaching is a service profession, and nobody is more aware of their sense of duty to serve than a teacher. It is oxymoronic (or is that just moronic? Is it even a word? Who cares?) that we are taken advantage of when we doth not protest, and attacked as "unteacher-like" when we stand up for ourselves! HELLO? After all, we are the ones who are expected to give (they are CHILDREN, for heaven's sake!). Good teachers don't go into the profession if they are not already on the path to martyrdom. To stray from that path, even to better their situation, is considered selfish. To remain on it results in the public perception that teachers have either no spine or don't care enough about improving their "lot" to do anything about it, so why should they? I must say that this article ( teacher views by John C.) tickled my funny bone. Anything that can get me to laugh at the tale end of my fifth year practicum is threading into genius level. The article gave a valid explanation for the lack of credibility teachers have in their community. The article also did a great job of comparing other professions and the way they earn respect to that of teachers. By adding humour and comparison this article retained credibility without sounding pretentious. Great Article!!! Amie Uzzell |

| I think your magazine is great. I am a teacher at a primary school in Welkom, South Africa. We started with Outcomes Based Education in grade 7 last year and are still battling with it. I teach English, second language, and we have to work out all our lessons. It takes up quite a lot of our time, but it is made easier by all the wonderful lessons and themes on the Internet. Thanks!!!! I would like to hear your views on OBE, as we heard that you started with it a while back. | ||
| I looked at it -- is it just the one page? I didn't see any links that would take me further. The teacher pay joke has been circulating for a few years. I also think people should not be allowed to write anonymously. I guess I was expecting more... It's a good idea, but if that's all there is, I won't look at it again. | ||

You want to know the truth about who should be held accountable in education? Do you really want to know, Mr. and Mrs. Mom and Dad? Are you sure you really want to know who the local, state, and (God Forbid) federal government should hold accountable if a school is deemed a "failure"? Take Junior Brainiac and stand in front of a mirror. That's right, the parents and the students are the ones who should be held accountable when the "high academic standards" aren't met and a school is deemed a failure. When you let little Suzy work until 1 a.m., or worse yet just let her run the streets, and then she falls asleep in class, how can I teach her anything? When your darling boy turns off his brain when he arrives at the school door, and then doesn't do the assignments THAT ARE DESIGNED TO HELP MASTER SKILLS AND NEW CONCEPTS, whose fault is it when he doesn't meet a standard? Not mine. I did my bit. You do yours. |
